Malaysia endured a tough start to their Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup journey, being bowled out for a mere 23 runs by Sri Lanka in Kuala Lumpur. Sri Lanka registered a commanding 139-run victory in the first of two matches on Sunday.
Sri Lanka’s Strong Batting Performance:
After being put in to bat, Sri Lanka’s openers set the tone with a quick start. Sanjana Kavindi smashed 30 off just 13 balls, while No. 3 batter Dahami Sanethma anchored the innings with a well-compiled 55 off 52 deliveries. The team scored an impressive 52 runs in the powerplay.
Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Sanethma held firm. Late contributions from Hiruni Hansika (28 off 21) and Shashini Gimhani (13 off 7) pushed Sri Lanka to 162. Siti Nazwah took 2 wickets for 31 runs.
Malaysia Crumble Under Pressure:
In response, Malaysia’s batting lineup faltered dramatically. Left-arm spinner Chamodi Praboda struck twice in the second over, reducing the hosts to 2 for 3.
Malaysia’s innings lasted just 14.1 overs, with no batter reaching double figures. Six players were dismissed without scoring.
Chamodi Praboda starred with the ball, finishing with remarkable figures of 3 wickets for just 5 runs in her 4-over spell, including two maidens. Manudi Nanayakkara and Limansa Thilakarathna chipped in with two wickets each, sealing a dominant win for Sri Lanka.
