Melbourne: Team India faced an injury scare ahead of the highly anticipated Boxing Day Test against Australia as captain Rohit Sharma sustained a blow to his left knee during a practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The incident occurred while Rohit was facing throwdown specialist Daya in the nets on Sunday (Dec 22).
Rohit appeared to be in discomfort after the blow but continued to bat briefly before leaving the nets to receive medical attention.
The team physio applied an ice pack to the affected area and elevated his leg on a chair to reduce any swelling.
While the injury did not seem serious, the medical staff is taking precautionary measures to ensure Rohit’s fitness for the match starting on December 26.
Times of India had posted a video related to this incident, showing Rohit Sharma receiving treatment from the physio after being struck on the knee.
Rohit Sharma’s Struggles in the Series
The Indian skipper’s form in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been under scrutiny. He has managed just 19 runs in three innings at a disappointing average of 6.33, with a highest score of 10.
With India and Australia tied at 1-1 in the series, Rohit’s recovery and return to form will be crucial for the visitors.
Akash Deep Also Takes a Blow
Rohit’s injury wasn’t the only concern during India’s practice session. Fast bowler Akash Deep was also struck on the arm while batting. However, he downplayed the incident during a press conference later in the day.
“Such blows are common when you play cricket,” Akash Deep said. “I think this wicket was prepared for white-ball cricket, which is why the ball was staying low. But these things happen, and there’s nothing to worry about.”
With the Border-Gavaskar Trophy finely poised, India is aiming to bounce back from its batting woes in the previous matches.
Rohit Sharma’s experience and leadership will be pivotal as the visitors seek an edge in the series.
