Nineteen-year-old batting sensation Sam Konstas is set to make his Test debut for Australia in the highly anticipated Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26.
Konstas, who was called up to the squad for the final two Tests, is likely to slot in as an opener following the exclusion of Nathan McSweeney.
Reflecting on his selection, Konstas shared his excitement during an interview. “I was actually in the nets, and I got the call from George Bailey … I was so thrilled,” he said.
The youngster described the emotional moment he informed his parents about his selection. “I called my parents straight away and they were very emotional. Mum was in tears, and I was telling her not to cry, then dad was super proud. It’s been an amazing journey (with) all the ups and downs, so I’m very grateful for their sacrifices.”
Facing the Bumrah Challenge
Konstas is expected to face a stern challenge from India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been Australia’s nemesis this series. Bumrah has dismissed both Australian openers—McSweeney and Usman Khawaja—four times each, leaving the hosts searching for answers at the top of the order.
Bumrah’s current record in Australia is formidable. With 53 wickets at an astonishing average of 17.15 across three tours, he boasts the best bowling average for any overseas bowler in the country.
Despite the threat posed by Bumrah, Konstas is prepared for the challenge. “I won’t watch too much [of him],” he said. “I have already seen him a lot. But I am excited to challenge myself and face him. Usually, our analysts do a little feedback on each bowler. I might read that, maybe.”
The teenager is determined to approach the contest with a positive mindset. “I want to be challenged, and I’ve got a few plans against those bowlers,” he said. “I’m just going to react to the ball, show a bit of intent and put pressure back on the bowlers.”
Youngest Australian Test Batter in Over 70 Years
Should Konstas take the field on December 26, he will become Australia’s youngest Test debutant since Pat Cummins, who debuted at 18 years and 193 days against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2011.
At 19 years and 85 days, Konstas will also be the youngest batting debutant since Ian Craig made his debut against South Africa at the MCG in 1953 at the age of 17 years and 239 days.
With Australia and India locked at 1-1 in the five-match Test series, the Boxing Day Test promises to be a pivotal encounter. All eyes will be on Konstas as he looks to make an impact in one of the biggest fixtures in world cricket.
