Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the greatest spinners in the history of the red ball cricket, has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.
The announcement came at the post-match press conference following the third BGT Test against Australia at Gabba, which ended in a draw today (18 Dec).
Ashwin did not play in the third Test against Australia and last represented India in the second Test between the two countries.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Ashwin leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled success as a bowler.
Over 106 Test matches, the 38-year-old claimed 537 wickets, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, behind only Anil Kumble. Globally, he ranks as the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket.
Beyond the red-ball format, Ashwin’s overall statistics speak volumes of his excellence and adaptability. In a total of 287 international matches across formats, he scalped 765 wickets, cementing his place as one of cricket’s all-time greats.
Speaking about his decision, Ashwin expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and BCCI who supported him throughout his journey.
“There are a lot of people to thank, but I would be failing in my duties if I didn’t thank the BCCI and the fellow teammates and I want to name a few of them.” Ashwin said.
“All the coaches who’ve been in part of the journey, most importantly Rohit, Virat (Kohli), Ajinkya (Rahane), (Cheteshwar) Pujara, who’ve taken those splendid catches around the bat to give me the number of wickets I’ve managed to get over the years.
“Also a big thank you to the Australian cricket team who’ve been very fierce competitors. I have enjoyed my time playing against them”
“As a cricketer, I just stopped it and I might go on to be involved with the game because this is a game that’s given me everything, right?”
🗣️ “I’ve had a lot of fun and created a lot of memories.”
